When you would think of doing research, numerous question may come to mind, for instance, how do I get started, what are the pre-requisite, when should I start, how can I convert my ideas into research, and so on. In this article, I am going to the resolution of your question. Understanding some fundamental before beginning research will make the next steps easier.

After viewing this article you will understand:

  1. Definition of research.
  2. Types of research.
  3. Research method & methodology.

Well, let's get started………………

At the beginning of the writing, I would like to thank Dr Md. Mostafijur Rahman Sir. In my undergrad life, I was fortunate to work with him, and I would like to thank Allah (SWT) so much because I got a great teacher in life who inspired me a lot to do something unique.

I. DEFINITION OF RESEARCH

When I began to research, I was in a dilemma to get a clear explanation of the research. I think a simple definition of research relates to whether knowledge distribution, real-life problem solving, solution model, and how efficient is your solution. Did you get confused? Don’t worry! Keep reading.

Suppose you want to make a mobile application to solve traffic congestion. First, probably you would think the software development life cycle (SDLC), application features, or if it’s a machine learning work you would think about the predictive model, and accuracy, right? Research does not speak about the only predictive model build, accuracy, or idea into development, it relies on more and more experiment as well. Here is a gap between the academic project and a research project. Without evaluation, system experiment, performance measures, and data analysis research aims are not meet.

II. TYPES OF RESEARCH

Usually, research extensively classified into two major classes such as fundamental research and applied research. Moreover, these classes farther divided into three categories, for instance, qualitative research, quantitative research, and mixed research. Although there are several types of research can be found, basically, the above-mentioned studies are used more. Take a close look at the Fig.1 given below:

Fig.1: Types of scientific research

If you observe closely at the picture above Fig.1, you will realize that research is basically divided into several sections. Now I’m going to talk about qualitative research and quantitative research because at present these two kinds of research are being done more.

II(A). QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Just have a look at below and take a close look at the scenario:

Suppose Mr. (X) is an owner of (Y) restaurant, and he began a fast food business near Rabindra Sarobar, Dhaka. The Y restaurant is specializing in serving McDonald’s Baked Apple Pie and Popcorn Chicken Nuggets. However, despite the quality of the food, it was seen that the consumer is not coming more or the girl consumer is not coming more. For this reason, Mr X’s restaurant business seems to be collapsing. Furthermore, he decided to use Qualitative research technique to get understand why aren’t more customers coming?. So he decided to apply qualittative research method on the purchaser behaviour are as follows:

Focus Groups Interviews:

Focus groups interviews is a systematic process where known customers are requested to have a group interview. In most cases, it can be seen that the owner directly ask some question to improve or to know specifically which types of the product should replace and how to enhance customer interaction or even what they like or dislike.

In-Depth Interviews:

In-Depth Interviews is called one to one (1-To-1) interviews which is a qualitative research technique conducted by extremely experienced interviewers where the individual consumer would be interviewed by the interviewers to explore respective on a particular subject, it can be their feelings, motivation, or something else.

Observe Customer Behaviour:

Observation of customer behaviour is another qualitative research method where identity individuals customer or organizations behaviour. Usually, consumer observation connected with motives, psychology, and behaviour.

The investigation of consumer habits incorporate:

  1. How they choose a product while shopping.
  2. How a consumer considers a different product and known product.
  3. Find out behaviour and feelings while shopping.

II(B). QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

Quantitative is a systematic and scientific investigation of data and their relationship. The objective of the quantitative method is to develop and employ a mathematical model and shows the relationship between data and observation. There is no requirement to directly observe each participant. To illustrate, qualitative research requires face to face communication whereas quantitative research collects data without face to face communication. A study can send surveys to individuals without the need to have a consumer in the place while contributing their answer.

III. RESEARCH METHOD & METHODOLOGY

Various individuals make mistakes about the research method & methodology even I got confused beforehand. Usually, the Research method used to define the research topic and ascertained a more profound perception of it, and collect research data.

On the other hand, the methodology is another way to solve the research problem and comprises different methods which are utilized during the execution of the experiment. The major aim of the research methodology is:

  1. The accuracy of the research method being used and how good it is?
  2. Is the method being used suitable for research?
  3. Does the method being used relate to sustainable development?

To conclude, the research method & methodology are two different sections. Research methodology gives a reasonable explanation backwards the actions used in the research whereas the research method gives us various technique to collect data.

Next day I will talk about the research step and how to convert an idea into the research. Thank you for your patience and cooperation
